The Old Railway Line Garden Centre

Three Cocks was a major junction within the Midland Railway. The main line from Hereford entered the Three Cocks junction where you could either continue through to Brecon or branch off to Builth Wells. The Three Cocks station was opened to goods trains in September 1864 with the refreshment room proving popular with train drivers.

The line was closed to passengers in December 1962 and was eventually axed by Dr Beeching in 1964 as part of his national modernisation of the railway network.

Christina’s father purchased the land in the 1960’s and ran a small piggery from the site. In 1990 Mark and Christina started selling home grown bedding plants from a small 8x6ft greenhouse next to the entrance. Mark started to increase trade by attending local markets including Builth and Brecon.

Customer numbers and demand for quality plants was constantly increasing so the decision was taken to open a small plant area and build a couple of poly tunnels from which the garden centre you see today started from.

Brecon

Brecon, the beating heart of the Brecon Beacons’ National Park, nestles in the Usk Valley between the Brecon Beacons to the south and the Black Mountains to the east.

The picturesque market town, famed for its Georgian architecture, is an ideal base for a holiday, with plenty of accommodation, cafes, restaurants and shops. It has a long and important history as a town within the region.

For those who love the outdoors Brecon is one of the UK’s most popular tourists destinations, with endless opportunities to take part in activities such as walking, climbing, canoeing and horse-riding provided by easy access to the River Usk, Brecon and Monmouthshire Canal and of course the nearby Brecon Beacons.

Saturday

En route to The Garden Centre we travel via Hirwaun, Penderyn and under the Cadair Fawr out to the A470 by Cantref Reservoir. We then travel north under the shaddow of Pen y Fan to Brecon and on to the garden centre for a late morning / lunchtie visit.
In the afternoon we hop on The Dragonfly Cruise for a 2hr 30minute leisurley cruise on The Brecon Canal.
The day is finished off with a meal at The Plough Inn, Rhosmaen
